Telefónica’s Movistar has initiated a strategic collaboration with Helium to launch the Helium Network, bringing service activation to over 2 million Movistar subscribers nationwide. This initial phase of deployment will focus on expanding network infrastructure across more than 300 locations.
The partnership marks a significant step towards widespread adoption of the Helium Network, simultaneously driving down operational costs for Movistar. To accelerate network coverage, the Helium community will deploy Helium Mobile Hotspots, which will soon be available for purchase through Movistar's retail outlets and online platforms. Additionally, Movistar will play a pivotal role in extending Helium Network access to local Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs) through resale agreements.
At Telefónica Movistar México, we are focused on alliances that allow technological deployment acceleration and better quality for users, while generating efficiencies.
“We’re seeing what’s possible and exploring how a network powered by people can bring more value to Telefónica and our subscribers across Mexico. This partnership will be a turning point in reshaping connectivity, with Mexico leading the charge,” said Camilo Aya Caro, President & CEO of Telefónica Movistar México.
Successful Pilots
In 2024, Movistar and Helium launched a pilot project to enhance network coverage in select areas across Mexico, enabling mobile data offloading onto the Helium Network. This initiative, designed through a collaborative approach, allowed Movistar subscribers to seamlessly connect to Helium’s decentralized wireless infrastructure.
Successful trials in Mexico City and Oaxaca validated the potential of Helium’s technology. During the pilot phase, Movistar users offloaded an average of 390 MB of data daily—equivalent to five hours of social media browsing or 3,900 emails—and maintained approximately one hour of daily connection time.
New Business Model
Helium and Movistar are reshaping the telecommunications landscape with an innovative business model that relies on decentralized network infrastructure. Instead of traditional large-scale cell towers, this approach utilizes individually powered mini-cell towers to enhance coverage.
This model helps carriers significantly reduce infrastructure costs while improving connectivity for users. Movistar’s adoption of this community-driven approach highlights the potential of decentralized wireless technology, positioning Mexico as a leader in next-generation connectivity solutions.
The Helium Network
The Helium Network currently boasts nearly 59,000 Hotspots deployed across Mexico and the U.S., supporting more than 300,000 daily subscribers from Helium Mobile and major carriers.
Individuals can contribute to the network’s expansion by setting up a Hotspot in high-traffic locations such as businesses, retail shops, and event venues. In return, Hotspot owners earn cryptocurrency rewards for providing coverage and facilitating phone connections. The more data a Hotspot transfers, the higher the operator’s earning potential.
“Helium is on a mission to make connectivity more affordable for the masses,” said Mario Di Dio, GM of Network at Helium.
Collaborating with Movistar amplifies our vision of decentralized connectivity, inviting millions of their subscribers to use the Helium Network.
