Microsoft is set to enlarge its footprint in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin, through the acquisition of an additional 1,030 acres within Tax Incremental District No. 5 off Interstate 94. The company aims to construct more data centers, making it the primary landowner in a district initially designated for Foxconn, pending approval from the village and county.
Under the new agreement, Microsoft commits to constructing at least four buildings at the site, guaranteeing a minimum assessed value of $1.4 billion by January 1, 2028, in addition to Foxconn's obligation. AJ Steinbrecher, Microsoft's land acquisition director, highlighted the expected creation of construction jobs, full-time positions, and substantial capital investment.
Microsoft's collaboration with Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC), Milwaukee 7 (M7) and Racine County Economic Development Corporation played a pivotal role in advancing the project. WEDC Secretary and CEO Missy Hughes described Microsoft's addition to the state's business landscape as a significant win.
As part of the expansion initiative, Microsoft plans to invest $4.2 million in the restoration of 1.5 miles of Lamparek Creek, allocate $100,000 for water restoration efforts countywide and contribute $200,000 to support STEM education initiatives. Governor Evers expressed enthusiasm for Microsoft's continued growth in the state and commended local partners for their collaboration.
According to a blog post, Microsoft's general contractor, Walsh Construction, is scheduled to commence foundation work on the data center campus in Mount Pleasant on 90th Street in November, with the project expected to continue through late Spring 2024.
