Telefónica Movistar México and AT&T México have announced the extension of their wireless last-mile capacity agreement, originally signed in 2019, until the year 2030.
Under this agreement, AT&T provides Telefónica Movistar México with access to its wireless last-mile capacity for 3G, 4G, and 5G networks.
Starting in 2020, there was a gradual migration of Telefónica Movistar’s traffic to AT&T México’s access network. Since then, Telefónica Movistar customers have had access to AT&T México’s 3G and 4G networks, and as of 2022, they also have access to the 5G network.
“With this extended agreement, both companies will continue to operate independently, maintaining control over their respective transport and core networks, as well as their assets, management platforms, strategies, commercial offerings, and user base,” the companies said in a press release.
Telefónica Movistar in Mexico has strengthened its business model through infrastructure-sharing alliances, including the agreement with AT&T. This approach has led to a more efficient network deployment, contributing to sustainable connectivity and digital inclusion in the country.
AT&T México views this extension as a confirmation of their commitment to Mexico and their desire to further contribute to the development of the telecommunications sector in the country.
The agreement also enhances the competitive capabilities of both companies in a highly concentrated market, ultimately benefiting connectivity opportunities for more people in Mexico.
