Strengthening Quebec's role in the electric vehicle (EV) supply chain, the Honorable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry; François Legault, Premier of Quebec; and Pierre Fitzgibbon, Quebec Minister of Economy, Innovation and Energy, announced that their governments are working closely with Volta Energy Solutions Canada (VESC) on the establishment of a new copper foil facility in Granby.
Quebec will be the location for Volta’s first North American factory. This new project concerning copper foils, a valuable core component in EV batteries, further solidifies Canada's role as a pivotal hub for the future of EV manufacturing.
Working with VESC Canada is a vital step in securing the country’s battery supply chain and ensuring that Canada has a comprehensive electric vehicle ecosystem. This follows the prior investments by General Motors and Ford in establishing ambitious electric-vehicle battery component plants in Quebec.
Prioritizing the development of its own complete domestic battery ecosystem, working with world-leading companies and industries, and cutting down on emissions in the automotive sector are key factors on the journey to making Canada carbon-neutral by 2050.
With Volta’s project, Granby will become a major player in this new automotive ecosystem and get in on the action with battery manufacturing investments. This also confirms that Quebec attracts global leaders in the fields of battery manufacturing and transport electrification.
